Abstract:

The construction and demolition of buildings in cities pose considerable risks in the urban environment. This study selected Fuzhou, Xiamen, and Quanzhou as three typical cases, to analyze and predict their changes on building stocks and waste generation under three alternative scenarios until the end of this century. The results showed that: (1) The living status of the Fuzhou-Xiamen-Quanzhou’s residents are expected to reach or even exceed the current level of European and the US in the future. (2) Compared to the historical scenario, pursuing high level of living status would bring serious problems in resource and environment. A sustainable development can both keep a decent life of urban residents and benefit environment. (3) Extending service-life of buildings could significantly reduce generation of construction and demolition waste in Xiamen and developing compact city is effective for both Fuzhou and Quanzhou.Key words:
